Tunnel FAQs

What is meant by the word pitch?

It is the spacing between the outer wire and it refers to the distance between them, in inches.

What size pitch do I need?

If you are running a USDAA or AKC trial, 4 inch. All others do not need 4 inch pitch.

How long a tunnel do I need?

If you are running a trial, 10 feet or longer. Most use 15 or 20 foot.
If you want to weave a tunnel under an a frame or dog walk (36 foot) 15 foot or 20 is most commonly used.
Some people practice in their home or small yard and use smaller 10 foot. Some people use 5 footers to train pups (we have those also).

I can buy one tunnel. What size do you recommend?

If you have the space your first tunnel should be 20 foot since you can always condense it but can't stretch it.

What color should it be (dark/light)?

That depends if your dog has a reluctance to a certain color; that is what we would recommend to train with.

My dog LOVES tunnels -- do I really need one?

You certainly do, so that you can train discrimination so you will be able to control when he or she does or does not take a tunnel

How is the Ultralight tunnel made?

It is made of the same high quality material as our other Rocket Tunnels, only instead of 18 oz we make it with 13 oz.
We have the same heavy wire opening (not all other tunnels, even competition tunnels, have this (see our comparison page)).
Heat welded seam, not sewn, one wire size down on the exterior wire and 4-inch pitch spacing.
UV resistant, color fade resistant, fire retardant, washable (yes --mild soap and water)

How do Rocket Tunnels compare to their competitor's tunnels? <Click here for answer>

My dog loves to run through the tunnel as he plays in our back yard. Should we let him do this?

Absolutely not. You only want him running through when you want him to.

What colors can my dog see in a tunnel?

It's dark in the tunnel. Your dog really can't see any colors in there -- or even the gradations of color that dogs do see -- and when he comes out he's frequently blinded by the light.

Is the Ultralight Rocket Tunnel for me and my dog?

The answer is most probably.
Let me explain:
If it is just for the use of yourself and friends -- Yes.
If it is for a small dog -- Yes.
If it is my house and my GSD -- Yes.
If it is for a gym or to be used at trials -- Probably not.
If it is for a Saint or other extremely large dog -- No.
